To support early years providers during the coronavirus outbreak, the government temporarily disapplied and modified certain elements of the EYFS statutory framework. This was to allow providers greater flexibility to respond to changes in workforce availability and potential fluctuations in demand, while still providing care that is high quality and safe.
Find out more. The current EYFS statutory framework has been in effect since 3 April , following updates to the statutory framework. The main changes are:. Download one-page guide to changes to the EYFS. This handbook includes information about how and why EYFS assessments should be carried out and guidance on:.
This guidance shows how the four themes of the EYFS Framework and the principles that inform them work together to support babies and children. It illustrates how the Characteristics of Effective Early Learning may be supported and extended by adults as well as how they underpin the Prime and Specific Areas of Learning and Development. These areas are connected, with learning in one particular area supporting learning in the others.
To plan for successful learning, early years practitioners need to observe children to identify their interests, explore how they learn, and monitor their progress in each area of learning and development.
Reflecting on these observations means practitioners can shape learning experiences for individual children. Assessment is an ongoing process, but there are times when it is a statutory requirement to provide a summary of how children are developing in relation to expected levels of progress for their age. The Alliance publishes a helpful guide, Observation, Assessment and Planning which is grounded in the EYFS and provides useful templates for effective practice.
Childcare providers must take all reasonable steps to keep children safe and well.
